The Plant Room
Created by Donna Davis, an artist who explores the nexus between art and science to develop works that capture and create sites of ecological observation, The Plant Room uses assemblage, installation and digital media to evoke curiosity and contemplation with respect to our interactions in, and with the natural world.
The Plant Room references a Mechanical plant room, investigating some of the vital functions that plants play within the biosphere. With an estimated one in every five plant species vulnerable to extinction, the work also references five specific endangered plant species from the South East Queensland regions.
Plant species depicted in this work include the Shiny-leaved Condoo, Plectranthus habrophyllus, Cooneana Olive, Angle-stemmed Myrtle and the Swamp Tea-tree. Donna has referenced these specific species in an effort to highlight the very real threat of species decline and the inherent ecological implication of species loss.
Exploring potential reasons for species loss, Donna has used components that are human-made to create works that reference generators, air filters, life support systems, water pumps and nutrient cyclers; creating a tension between man and nature in order to examine the uncomfortable nature of human intervention.
Exhibition Available for Tour:
2016 Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, 7 December - 29 January 2017
2014 Queensland Herbarium, Brisbane Botanic Gardens, August/September
2013 Richard Randall Studio, Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, December
